less cash deposit scheme: A con in which the con artist uses a deposit slip that someone has lost or thrown away to deposit a fake check. After depositing the check, the grifter withdraws money from the account.

long con: A con that occurs over a long period of time.

mark: A potential victim of a scam.

multilevel marketing: A retail sales setup in which the more salespeople that you recruit, the more money you will receive off of commissions on your sales, as well as off of the sales of the people that you have recruited. In addition, you will receive commissions from the people that your salespeople recruit. Multilevel marketing is not necessarily illegal.

Nigerian letter: In this type of scam, a victim receives a fax or email from a person in Nigeria who is supposedly sitting on a large amount of money that cannot be transferred out of Nigeria because of exchange controls. The person asks the victim for the victim’s bank account number in exchange for a large commission so that the money can be transferred out of Nigeria into the victim’s account. Instead, the bank account is depleted.
